How to use it
- Drop one or more audio files onto the waveform, or press Open files. An example song is loaded so you can try everything first.
- Drag across the waveform to select. Fine-tune the In and Out times by typing, nudging with the arrow keys, or snapping to a zero crossing.
- Press Play (Space) to audition; turn on Loop to repeat the selection while you adjust it.
- Choose Trim to keep the selection or Delete to cut it out. Add fades, gain or normalization from the Clip and Effects panels.
- Pick WAV or MP3 in Export and press Export. The file is checked by decoding it again before you download it.
What happens to your audio
Files are decoded by your browser's own audio engine (or by the built-in WAV reader for exact PCM) and kept in this tab's memory. Editing, effects and encoding all run on your device, in background workers so the page stays responsive. There is no upload step, no account and no server that could keep a copy.
Edits are non-destructive: the original samples are never changed. The timeline is a list of clips that point into your files, so every trim, delete, split and fade can be undone and redone, and a project file can be saved and reopened later.
Precision when it matters
Selections are stored as whole sample frames, not rounded seconds. A 10.000–25.500 s trim of a 44.1 kHz file is exactly 683,550 frames long in the exported WAV. Snap to zero crossing moves an edge to the nearest point where the waveform crosses zero, which avoids clicks at hard cuts; joins between unrelated pieces also get a 3 ms de-click ramp unless you set a longer crossfade.
Formats
Import: anything your browser can decode, typically WAV, MP3, M4A/AAC, FLAC, OGG and WebM/Opus, plus the audio track of many MP4 videos. The file header is checked first, so an unsupported codec gets a specific explanation instead of a generic error.
Export: WAV 16/24-bit PCM and 32-bit float (native), MP3 (bundled lamejs encoder, runs locally), and M4A, iPhone .m4r and Opus where your browser provides a WebCodecs encoder. Unavailable formats are labelled as such in the export panel. FLAC export is not available yet.
Questions
Is MusicCutter free?
Yes. Every editing and export feature works without an account or payment. The site may show clearly separated ads outside the editor to cover hosting.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Decoding, editing and encoding all happen in your browser. You can confirm it by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads: cutting and exporting keep working.
How long can my recording be?
It depends on your device memory. Up to about 18 minutes of stereo audio is comfortable; beyond roughly 35 minutes of stereo the editor declines to load the file and suggests splitting it, rather than crashing the tab.
Why is my MP3 slightly longer than the selection?
MP3 frames hold 1,152 samples and the encoder adds a short start-up delay, so players add about 25–50 ms of silence. Choose WAV when you need a sample-exact length.
