Make a ringtone from any song

Pick the 30 seconds you want to hear when your phone rings. Presets set the length and fades; you choose where it starts.

How to use it

  1. Open the song and play it until the part you want.
  2. In Ringtone, choose a preset. The selection is set to that exact length starting at the playhead.
  3. Drag the selection to fine-tune the start; its length stays fixed when you drag the middle.
  4. Press Apply preset: the editor trims to the selection and adds the preset fade in and fade out.
  5. Export. Android uses MP3; iPhone uses .m4r if your browser has an AAC encoder.

iPhone ringtones (.m4r)

An iPhone ringtone is AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container with the .m4r extension, up to 40 seconds long. Creating AAC requires the browser's WebCodecs AAC encoder, which Chrome and Edge provide on Windows, macOS and Android, and Safari 17 and later provides on Mac. Firefox and Chromium on Linux do not, and in those browsers the .m4r option is marked unavailable and the preset exports MP3 instead. We do not rename an MP3 to .m4r, because iPhones reject that.

To install: connect the phone and drag the .m4r onto the device in Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows), or share an audio file to GarageBand on the phone and export it as a ringtone.

Android ringtones

Android accepts MP3 of any length. Copy the file to the Ringtones folder or open it from Files and choose "Set as ringtone". Keep it near 30 seconds so the ending is not cut off by voicemail.

Questions

Why is the iPhone option disabled for me?

Your browser does not expose an AAC encoder. Use Chrome or Edge on Windows/macOS, or Safari 17+, or export MP3 and convert it with GarageBand on the iPhone.

How long can an iPhone ringtone be?

Up to 40 seconds for ringtones and 30 seconds for text and alert tones. The editor warns before exporting a longer .m4r.

Can I make a notification sound?

Yes: use the 5-second notification preset, which trims to 5 seconds with a short fade out.
