Remove silence and long pauses

The example voice memo has long gaps. Press Detect to see them highlighted, adjust the threshold, then remove them in one undoable step.

How to use it

  1. Open the recording.
  2. In Silence, set Threshold (how quiet counts as silence), Minimum length and Keep padding.
  3. Press Detect silence. Regions are shaded on the waveform and the total time saved is shown.
  4. Press Remove detected to cut them all; or Trim start and end for leading/trailing silence only.
  5. Listen, undo if it is too tight, adjust and try again.

Choosing the threshold

A clean studio recording has silence below −60 dBFS; a phone voice memo with room noise may sit around −45 dBFS. Start at −45 dBFS and a 500 ms minimum length. If breaths and quiet word endings are being removed, lower the threshold or raise the padding. Padding keeps that much audio at each edge of a pause so speech does not sound chopped.

Every removal is a cut in the clip list with an automatic de-click ramp, not a destructive change, so one undo restores everything.

Questions

Does this remove background noise?

No. It removes stretches that are quieter than the threshold. To reduce noise between words without cutting time, use the noise gate in Effects (a gate is not AI denoising).

Can I shorten pauses instead of removing them?

Yes: set Keep padding to half the pause length you want to keep, e.g. 250 ms to leave 0.5 s pauses.

Will music with quiet passages get cut?

It can. Use a low threshold such as −60 dBFS and a long minimum length (2 s or more) for music.
