Split a recording into separate files

Mark where each part begins, split at all markers, and download every part as its own file in one ZIP.

How to use it

  1. Open the long recording: a DJ set, a lecture, a band rehearsal.
  2. Play and press M wherever a new part starts. Markers are listed in the Markers panel with exact times you can edit.
  3. Press Split at markers to cut the timeline into clips; or put the playhead on a point and press S to split there.
  4. Export each clip as a ZIP from the Markers panel.
  5. Files are named after the original file plus the part number.

Finding split points faster

In speech, the pauses between sections show up as flat stretches on the waveform. The Silence panel can list them for you, and you can place a marker in each long pause. Zoom in with Ctrl/⌘ + scroll or the zoom buttons to place a marker precisely in the gap.

Splitting is non-destructive

A split only adds a boundary to the clip list; it does not change any sample, and exporting the whole timeline after splitting gives exactly the original audio. You can undo a split, or delete, reorder and fade individual parts before exporting.

Questions

What format is the ZIP?

A standard uncompressed ZIP that opens in Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile file managers. Audio is already compressed or PCM, so ZIP compression would save little.

Can I split by fixed length, like every 10 minutes?

Add markers at those times by typing them in the Markers panel, then split at markers.

Do parts get fades?

Not automatically. Select a part and use Fade in or Fade out if a part starts or ends mid-sound.
