Cut a song down to the part you want

Pull the chorus out of a track, shorten an intro for a video, or keep a hook for a reel. The example song is already selected from bar 3 to bar 8.

How to use it

  1. Drop the song file onto the waveform.
  2. Play the track and press M at the start and end of the section you want; markers help you find bar lines again.
  3. Drag across the waveform between the markers. Turn on Loop and listen to the selection repeat: if the loop is seamless, the cut lands on the beat.
  4. Press Trim to keep only the selection, then add a short fade out so the ending does not sound clipped.
  5. Export as MP3 for sharing or WAV for further editing.

Cutting on the beat

Music edits sound natural when they fall on a downbeat. Looping the selection is the fastest test: a selection that is exactly a whole number of bars loops without a stumble. Nudge either edge by 10 ms with the arrow keys (Shift for 100 ms, Alt for a single sample) until the loop sits right.

If a cut lands in the middle of a sustained note, a fade out of 1–3 seconds hides it. For an abrupt cut on a drum hit, a very short fade of 5–20 ms keeps the punch but removes the click.

Making a highlight from two sections

To combine the intro with the final chorus, select the middle you do not want and press Delete. The two remaining parts are joined; open Clip and set a crossfade of 50–200 ms on the join so the change of section blends instead of jumping.

Questions

Can I cut a song without losing quality?

Export WAV to keep the decoded audio exactly as it was. Re-encoding to MP3 is lossy; at 192–320 kbps the difference is hard to hear, but repeated MP3 re-encoding accumulates artefacts.

Can I cut music from a video file?

Often yes: drop the MP4 or WebM and the browser extracts its audio track if it can decode the codec. If not, the editor explains why and suggests converting the video first.

Does cutting a song change its pitch or tempo?

No. Trimming only chooses which samples to keep. Pitch and tempo change only if you use Speed or Pitch in the Effects panel.
